Critical Care Research Nurse
Joyce Okahashi, R.N., joined the ICU Delirium and Cognitive Impairment Study Group at Vanderbilt University Medical Center as a member of the Department of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine, in 2006. Joyce has worked primarily as a critical care nurse for more than 25 years and holds active licenses in three states; Tennessee, Florida and Hawaii. She was responsible for assisting investigators with the development of research protocols, applications, IRB submissions, consenting, collecting specimens and conducting patient visits. These studies included lung cancer, feeding studies, DVT, telomeres, genetic data banking, HIV and others.
Her current role with the ICU Delirium team is as the Lead Research Nurse Specialist charged with the coordination of all aspects of the hospital phase of the delirium studies at Vanderbilt. She is also the Program Clinical Manager for the Delirium group’s studies at the VA hospitals in Nashville, TN Valley Healthcare System, and two other sites; VA Salt Lake City Healthcare System in Salt Lake City, Utah and Puget Sound Healthcare System in Seattle, Washington.
She received her nursing degree from Florida College and worked on her BSN through the University of Phoenix. Over the years she has also worked as a Case Manager, IV Therapy Coordinator and Information Specialist in telephonic nursing and with the Hawaii Poison Center.
