Bryan A. Cotton, MD

Bryan A. Cotton, M.D., joined the faculty of Vanderbilt University Medical Center July 1 as assistant professor of Surgery in the department of Surgery in the division of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, Surgical Critical Care.
He received his M.D. from Ross University School of Medicine in New York, NY and did his residency in General Surgery at the University of Missouri Hospital & Clinics in Columbia, MO. He completed a fellowship in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He was also Clinical Instructor in General Surgery, in the Department of Surgery, in the Division of Traumatology and Surgical Critical Care, at both the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and St. Luke’s Hospital, in Bethlehem, PA.
His specialties are emergency general surgery, trauma surgery, and surgical critical care. His research focuses upon sleep disturbances in the ICU, delirium in the ICU, and paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (“sympathetic storms”) following severe traumatic brain injury. He also has an interest in intravenous fluid solutions and their impact on post-trauma and post-operative complications.
